Corbin stared at the ceiling. He might have slept all of two hours, but he was grateful that Gretta had fallen asleep.

His grandfather told him that love was a funny thing. When it happened, there was no stopping it once the right person came along. Corbin loved his grandpa. He was one of the best men Corbin had ever met, but sometimes he could be a sap and Corbin had believed this was one of those moments.

Until now.

His phone rang.

He reached across Gretta and snagged it from the nightstand. “Hey, Wyatt. What’s up?” He tapped the speaker button. “Did you find something out about Gretta’s sister?”

“Not yet, but we’ve got a change in plan. Darius wants to meet at your place. Like now. Is that okay with the two of you?”

“I’ll put coffee on.”

“See you soon.”

“Was that Wyatt?” Gretta rolled and stretched. “What’s going on?”

“He and Darius are on their way over.” He tossed his legs to the side of the bed and reached his arms for the ceiling. His back didn’t feel like a brick, but it was stiff. He needed to stretch a little before standing up. He went through a few of the exercises.

Gretta leaped off the bed.

Must be nice to be able to do that.

Maybe someday, but Corbin wasn’t about to tempt fate.

“Did he give any indication as to why?” Gretta hiked up a pair of jeans and fumbled with her bra before putting on a sweatshirt.

“Nope. But we’ll find out in about ten minutes.” He rose slowly. The mornings could often be the worst part of the day. Today, it wasn’t that bad.

He took that as a good sign.

“I have no new messages from Blair from either number.”

“Let’s go with no news is good news.”

“I hate that saying.” She pushed past him, racing out of the bedroom, wrestling with a hair tie.

He followed her into the kitchen, realizing in the short time he’d known Gretta, he’d never seen her nervous. A small part of him relished in finally experiencing another aspect. But he resented the situation that brought on the emotion.

His baby sister was only seven. However, he’d move heaven and earth to keep her safe. If he thought even the slightest danger lurked in the distance, he’d be on the next plane to Candlewood Falls.

Gretta stood in front of the coffee maker, tapping her short fingernails against the countertop as she waited for the machine to spit out the first cup of brew. “I woke up twice with a couple of thoughts.”

“What were they?” He moved to the front door, unlocked it, and flicked on the outside light.

A tap at the door prevented her from answering. He pulled it open. “Good morning.” He shook Wyatt’s free hand.

“Thanks for seeing us so early.” Wyatt stepped inside, shedding his coat, shifting his to-go cup from one hand to the next.

“Darius, it’s good to see you again,” Corbin said. “This is Gretta Hughes.”

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” Darius handed his jacket to Corbin. “I’ve heard all good things from Stone and Wyatt.
